Hisbaptismal name was Inigo Lopez de Re-calde; his historical name was adoptedafter his conversion. In his youth he en-tered the army; during the defense ofPampeluna in 1521,against the French,he was severelywounded, and a longand tedious confine-ment was the his conva-lescence he read sev-eral religious books,which caused him tochange the wholecourse of his renounced theworld, made a for-mal visit to theshrine of the Virgin at Montserrat and vowedhimself her knight. After his dedication hemade a pilgrimage to Rome and Jerusalem;then he attended the schools and universities. LOYOLA LUBBOCK 218B LUCKNOW of Barcelona, Alcala and Salamanca. Oncompleting his studies he went to Paris,where he went through a seven years courseof general and theological training. Here,in 1534, he formed the first nucleus of theSoeietj of Jesus, or Jesuits, which after-ward became so famous. Frangois Xa\der, professor of philosophy,Lainez and others, in conjunction withLoyola, bound themselves together to devotethemselves to the care of the Church andthe conversion of infidels. Rome ultimatelybecame their headquarters, and Loyola sub-mitted the plans of his new order to PopePaul III, who, under certain limitations, con-firmed it in 1540. Loyola continued to re-side in Rome and governed the society hehad constituted till his death. He was beati-fied in 1607 by Paul V and was canonized in1622 by Gregory XV. See Jesuits. LUBB
