According to Genesis 22, verses 1-24, of the Hebrew Bible, God asks Abraham (whom Jews honor as the father of the Hebrew nation) to sacrifice his son on Mount Moriah. Obeying God's command, Abraham leads Isaac (as shown here in this 1895 illustration), carrying the wood for the fire. An angel stops them on their way and Abraham sees a ram in the bushes and sacrifices the ram instead.
