The elevation at this point is 5,950 feet, which is very near the highest point on the Blue Ridge Parkway at nearby Richland Balsam at 6,053 feet. Cowee Mountain Overlook is one of the more popular spots in the area due to the wide open views of the Nantahala National Forest, especially at sunset since the view is to the west at this point. The Nantahala National Forest was established in 1920, and encompasses over 800 square miles within the state of North Carolina.
