Gall bladder cancer surgery. Image 5 of 12. Liver segment being removed during surgery for a cancerous gall bladder. The device being used here is the Cavitron ultrasonic surgical aspirator (CUSA), which uses ultrasound technology to allow dissection with minimal blood loss. The gall bladder is a small organ that stores bile from the liver, and releases it into the digestive tract. Cancer of the gall bladder is relatively rare, and is usually treated by surgical removal. Prognosis is poor, because the cancer has usually spread, requiring removal of parts of the liver and other surrounding organs.
