A former possessor about sixty orseventy years ago, after clearing it out to a consider-able depth, came to a wooden floor, which he wasunwilling to disturb, and therefore covered up thewell. But the tower1 has now been examined very carefullyto the lowest foundations, and no traces of a well, or of anywater supply, found. Two deep wells,2 however,exist without the wall, and these, doubtless, were sunk forthe supply of the city; in one of them some octagonal woodpiping was found.
