On the night of Au-gust 23-24 the regimentmarched to the railroad stationin Amiens and entrainedfor the American sectorin the vicinity of Verdun,passing through the out-skirts of Paris, throughthe battered town ofChateau Thierry, andthrough Epernay, famous for its champagne. The railroad through thisarea had just been repaired and reopened for traffic. Until September 6 the regiment was stationed in and near Salmagne,refitting itself and preparing for further action. This was a difficult under-taking, in many ways, for the regiment had used the Enfield rifle and theLewis automatic rifle while on the British front. It now became necessaryfor the men to learn to use the 1917 Model Springfield rifle, the FrenchChauchat automatic, and the French hand and rifle grenades. Moreover,they had to
