Ruined tower of St Mary's Abbey, Bardsey Island, founded by AD1200 on the traditional site of a C6th Celtic monastery associated with SS Cadfan, Dyfrig & Deiniol. The Victorian Celtic-style 'high cross' is a memorial to the legendary 20,000 saints buried on the island. Abbey dissolved 1536-7. Artist & writer Brenda Chamberlain lived on Bardsey 1947-61, mainly in Carreg farmhouse; she described her experiences in the book Tide-race published in 1962.
