. Railway mechanical engineer . tage not only inaccurately and quickly grinding holes and bushings whichcould be bored but also in repairing parts which it wouldbe virtually impossible to finish by any other process owingto the limited thickness of the wall. This type of machine isbeing used to grind bushings in all kinds of motion workparts, triple valves, knuckle pin bushings, link trunnions, automatic fire door cylinders, and numerous other parts. Automatic machines have been installed by some possibilities in reducing maintenance cost have as yet, however, been but little appreciated. It is true that to securethe utmost economy from automatic machine operationreasonably long production runs must be scheduled for thembut it is not impossible to employ them profitably on whatwould be considered in commercial work inadequate if only one multiple spindle automatic screw machinecan be installed in a shop and requires an operator for thatmachine alone; it is possible to operate it Single Spindle Automatic Making Motion Work Bushings Conservatively estimated, three times the production of asingle turret lathe can be secured from one four-spindle auto-matic machine. Allowing for excessive loss of time to set upfor short runs of work, and even idle time on the part ofthe machine, it is possible to secure an output equivalent totwo turret lathes. Supplementing a multiple spindle auto-matic screw machine for small bar-stock work such as studs, rod dowels, etc. with a larger size single spindle automaticscrew machine for motion work pins, bushings and otherkindred parts, it can be readily seen that with one operatorfor these two machines the possibilities for economical opera-tion are very much increased. Automatic chucking machines virtually duplicate turretlathe chucking practice as far as set up and tooling are con-cerned. The main modification lies in the mechanical per-formance of the work cycle rather than the manual per-formance,
