Perennial scapose herbs, with long-petioled thick 3-Iobed evergreen basal leaves, andlarge white or purple flouers, solitary on slender scapes. Involucre of 3 small sessile leavesclose under the rtowers, simulating a caljx. Sepals membranous, petal-like. Stamens allanther-bearing. Achenes short-beaked, pubescent. [Name ancient, from the supposed re-semblance of the leaves to the liver.] A genus of about 4 species, natives of the north temperate zone. Only the following are knownfrom North America. In woods, often in large tufts. Nova Scotiato northern Florida, west to Manitoba, Iowaand Missouri. Alaska. . to 2600 ft.
