View N along the E wall of Dun Liath Iron Age fort, Kilvaxter, Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK, showing the entrance passage (bottom centre). Shaped like a teardrop some 52m NNW-SSE, the fort with a single stone rampart is built on the summit of a rocky ridge running parallel to the sea. With cliffs 12-15m high at the W & N, & an escarpment rising 6m at the E, the fort is approached from the S via a gradually rising rocky slope. The thick drystone wall contains at least four segments of gallery, the narrow entrance passage is just over 1m wide suggesting the fort was not used to protect mature cattle. Distant views N to the Shiant Islands & the Western Isles.
