Light micrograph of a human egg (top) implanted in the uterus around 10 days after fertilisation. The syncytiotrophoblast forms the trophoblastic lacunae as the egg attaches to the endometrium. Surrounding the centre is the cytotrophoblast. This is a non-viable embryo, the cells of the inner cell mass have died.
