Hewas born in Lamstedt, Hanover, Germany, July 9, 1828, his parentsbeing Diedrich and Gazinna (Bach) Spreckels the former a farmerwho tilled the soil of a farm that had long been in possession of thefamily. The son pursued his education in the village schools untilfifteen years of age and worked upon his fathers farm until 1848,when he came to America, settling in Charleston, South found employment in a grocery store
