Wooden groyne north Felixstowe, Suffolk, England


The higher beach level to the left of the photo illustrates that longshore drift moves shingle from left to right ( north to south) along the Suffolk coast. Groynes trap sediment and so build up the beach this in turn acts as a defence against coastal erosion. A large beach dissipates wave energy.
