Blue sky aerial view Lake Powell, Dominguez Butte looking east to Tower Butte and LeChee Hill, Utah/Arizona boundary, USA

Lake Powell, with an average depth of 40 m (132 ft), has a surface area of 254 square miles (658 sq km) and is the second largest artificial lake in the USA. It is created by the Glen Canyon Dam (a few km to the right of the shot), which was built 1956-66. The dam regulates the flow of the Colorado River, generates hydroelectricity and stores water in the Upper Basin of the river for use, in times of drought, in the Lower Basin of the Colorado. Although the lake waters drown a canyon landscape, while the dam interferes with the natural ecology of the Colorado River, Lake Powell boosts the local tourist industry. It is a popular holiday resort, with a number of marina facilities and classic mesas and buttes scenery. This aerial view looks east from Dominguez Butte towards Tower Butte (right), Pinnacle Rock (left) and Le Chee Hill (centre background).
