Cottonwood tree seed fibres (Populus deltoides), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). In the spring cottonwood trees (Populus deltoides) bloom and produce seeds that are surrounded by small tufts of cotton-like material called cottonwood fibres. Cottonwood seeds bear long white fibres that are made primarily of cellulose. The seeds are wind dispersed due to the lightweight tufts of cottonwood fibres attached to the seeds. Magnification: x140 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
