Sunny portrait World War 2 and Alexander Chalmers memorial plaques on the wall of the Shoemakers' House, 10 Waski Dunaj, Warsaw

Originally built in the 16th century, this building was converted in 1799 to become the Seat of the Shoemakers' Guild, shoemakers, at that time, being one of the largest groups of craftsmen in the Old Town. The building, partially destroyed during the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, was later demolished and rebuilt. It now houses the Leathercraft Museum. The white plaque, to the right of the door, reads: 'Here lived Alexander Chalmers - a Scot, merchant., exceptional royal clerk and faithful subject of the Polish king. He came to Poland around 1676, where he changed his name to Aleksander Czamer. he served as a judge and was a four time Mayor of Warsaw in 1691, 1694, 1696 and 1702. He was a deputy to King August 11's coronation parliament. His life and service are a testimony to several hundred years of fruitful presence of the Scottish diaspora on Polish territory.' The Polish memorial plaque to the left of the door reads: 'In memory of colleagues tortured and murdered during the Hitlerite violence 1939-1945, guild of cobblers and makers of shoes.'
