Golestān Province is one of the 31 provinces of Iran, located in the north-east of the country, east of the Caspian Sea. Its population of million includes 43% Persians and 33% Turkmens. The latter live in the north of the province; they used to be nomadic people and follow the Hanafi school of Sunni interpretation. On Mondays, a colourful market is held in Bandar Torkaman, which is a social opportunity for many Turkmen people to travel from surrounding villages and meet with their relatives and friends.
