General Ludendorff and Baron von Richthofen, circa 1918. Erich Friedrich Wilhelm Ludendorff (1865-1937) was one of the leading German generals during the First World War. Baron von Richthofen (right) had been wounded in the head three days previously. Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (1892-1918) was one of the best known German fighter pilots during the First World War. By 1918, he was regarded as a national hero in Germany. The bright red paint on one of his aeroplanes earned him the name of Red Baron. Richthofen was shot down and killed near Amiens on 21 April 1918.
