The Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) was founded March 1917 and later renamed Queen Mary’s Army Auxiliary Corps (QMAAC) in April 1918. The Corps emerged from the Women’s Legion, founded in 1915 to provide cooks, waitresses and gardeners for the war effort. 57,000 women served in WAACs in non-combatant roles, such as cooks, storekeepers, administrators, motor transport drivers and mechanics.
