Kiwi Rail locomotive at Reefton on New Zealands South Island. The locomotives on this line are used to haul coal. Reefton is on the Stillwater-Westport line, which diverges from the Midland line at Stillwater. The railway reached Reefton on 29th February 1892 but on the other side of the river. A bridge was built in the early 20th century and the present day (closed) station 1967 all passenger services at Reefton ceased. The station and loco shed at Reefton are currently being restored by a local society. The coal travels to the east coast deepwater port of Lyttleton for export ander a contract with the government owned Solid Energy. A lot of the coal comes from the west coast Stockton Mine. It is mainly bituminous coal.
