Water Gardens and a Great Plat 91 from the keystone of an arch into a round pool overflows of the pools are carried down the centresof the water-gardens for one hundred and forty feetin canals (Fig. 62) filled with water plants, edged withpaving-stones and ending in oblong tanks abutting on tothe pergola which runs from end to end of the southernboundary of this garden. The water-gardens are the protecting bulwarks of thegreat plat—a square of one hundred and twenty-fivefeet—-which is reached from each end of either terraceby a stairway. The division of the great plat by strongdiagonal lines, which yield triangular spaces occupiedby beds and paving, is a notable feature of the it lessens the space dedicated to plants, it makesthe planting far more effective by grouping it into foursections well separated by restful stretches of , the introduction of narrow paved ways, edgingthe beds and shaping the grass plots, emphasizes thegeom
