The characters distin- guishing- Kotscht's Q. infec- toria, Q. inermis and othei' re- lated "species", of wliich he described a considerable number,—chiefly the shape and pubescense of the leaves—seem to vary so much even on the same tree, that it is hardly pos- sible without extensive investi- gations and cultures to establish a natural classification of this group of forms. There cannot be any doubt, that all these forms are closely related to each other, and it is therefore better at our present stage of knowledge, following the exam- ple of Alph. de Candolle, to unite them in one subspecies, which has—according to the present rules of botanical nomen- clature—to bear the name of Q. infectoria Oliv.
