PECATONICA RIVER VALLEY The second largest valley in the region is that of the Pecatonica River(Rockford map), and in some ways this valley is more remarkable thanthat of the Rock. It is not deeper, but it has an exceptionally wide (2 to 3miles), low flat, or flood-plain (Plate II). The flat is, indeed, so low thatit is drained but poorly, and during a large part of the year, is so wetas to make travel over it difficult or even impossible, except on roads whichhave been graded several feet above its level.
