Infection after vasectomy. Close-up of an infected scrotal haematoma four days after a vasectomy operation in a 45-year-old man. A vasectomy is a method of sterilization in which the vas deferens (the excretory duct of the testis) is cut. In this patient the stitched surgical cut has become the site of infection (centre). Pus has leaked from the wound, hardening to form a brown crust. A haematoma is an accumulation of clotted blood within the tissues resulting from a ruptured blood vessel. This has contributed to the swelling and redness of the scrotum. Treatment for the infection is with antibiotics.
