Richard Harrison Shryock (1893-1972), US historian of medicine. Shyrock obtained his doctorate in American History from the University of Pennsylvania, and between 1949 and 1958 was Director of the Johns Hopkins Institute of the History of Medicine. His works include 'Medicine and Society in America: 1660-1860' (1960). He was awarded the 1959 George Sarton Medal of the History of Science Society. He was president of that society, and also of the American Association for the History of Medicine, which awarded him its William H. Welch Medal in 1960. From 1958 to 1965, Shryock was Librarian of the American Philosophical Society.
