Osprey is made by Bell Boeing Program Office a strategic alliance between the Boeing Company NYSE BA and Bell Helicopter a Textron Company . Osprey is a tiltrotor VSTOL Vertical or Short Takeoff and Landing multi mission aircraft to be used by the United States Marine Corps . It combines a vertical take off helicopter with the speed and fuel efficiency of a turboprop medium range aircraft . It is powered by two Rolls RoyceT406 AD 400 turboshaft engines rated at 4400 kilowatts kW max continuous power . The entire rotor transmission and engine nacelles tilt through 90 degrees in forward rotation and are directed forwards for forward flight or tilt 7 point 5 degrees in aft rotation for VTOL . It has a working payload of 24 troops a combat range of some 200 nm or ferry 500 nm with a single in flight refuelling . Speed 250 knots at max take off weight . Vertical max take off weight is about 47500 lbs and using a short take off about 55000 lb . It can fold up for shipping from 57 feet 4 inches by 84 feet 7 inches by 22 feet 1 inch to an impressive fifth of original volume . The Ospreys flew from Marine Corps Air Station New River NC to Goose Bay Newfoundland then across the Atlantic to Farnborough with two Marine Corps KC 130J tanker aircraft while developing procedures for long range over water movements of V 22s . VMX 22 was to validate the Osprey s long range fuel system capability and aerial refuelling data with the goal of supporting future VMM unit level deployments .
