Intrathecal drug delivery. Coloured X-ray of a morphine pump (orange), which has been placed under the skin in the lower back of a 26 year old bones of the spine (vertebrae) are seen running down from upper centre. The pump is used to deliver small doses of morphine directly to the fluid surrounding the spinal cord (the intrathecal space) via a small catheter (a small, soft tube). This pain relief option is effective for patients with chronic, intractable pain, not controlled with high doses of oral medication.
