Con-crete was chosen because of the ease of handling it in dif-ficult places, such as under caving banks, without remov-ing bracing in water, etc. These spaces are covered with iron grating that can bereadily removed. Similar provision is made in the floor be-tween the back wall and engine cylinders for reaching thesteam piping and the reheaters. The foundations of thebuilding contain 20,000 cubic yards of concrete, the sidewalls being in some places 7 ft. thick. The whole founda-tion is built as a unit, and has a bed of river gravel upon 132 STRE
