Coronary stent. 3D computed tomography (CT) scans of the heart of a 58-year-old patient showing a stenosis (narrowing) of the left anterior descending

Coronary stent. 3D computed tomography (CT) scans of the heart of a 58-year-old patient showing a stenosis (narrowing) of the left anterior descending artery (anterior interventricular branch of the left coronary artery) before treatment (left) and with a stent in place (right). This procedure is known as coronary angioplasty. Stents (coiled tube, centre right) are wire mesh tubes that are used to provide support of passageways within the body. Here, it is being used to widen the section of artery that has become narrowed.
