At the acces-sion of the present Queen of the Netherlands theGrand Duchy was separated by virtue of the Salic law,and Luxemburg is one of the few remaining littlesovereignties into which most of the Rhineland wasdivided before the time of the French THE RED HOUSE, TRUCK iTRICVK The Moselle and the Upper MenseBut the railways, the post office and the customs areadministered by Germany. Below Trier the Moselle enters its gorge, which inone respect presents a striking contrast with that ofthe Rhine. From Bingen to Bonn the course of theRhine exhibits only two or three considerable bendssuch as to affect the course, not only of the river, but alsoof the valley. The Moselle on the other hand betweenTrier and Coblenz exhibits a series of the most re-markable convolutions, almost every one of which isfollowed, not merely by the river, but also by thegorge in the bottom of which it runs. In other words,the valley of the Moselle here perpetuates the courseof the river when it flowed high above its presentlevel on the surface of the plateau. As a consequenceof this intricacy and of the resulting great prolonga-tion of the waterway, the navigation of the Mosellebetween Trier and Coblenz is insignificant as
