Fruit medlar-like, but smaller and in clusters. A graft hybrid between Crataegus monogyna and Mespilus germanica, but more nearly approaching the medlar (see above). On a tree at Kewwhich has flowered for several years past are three distinct types of bulk of the tree is Dardari, as described above ; but there arebranches also of Asnieresii, as described above also, and some of puremedlar, with its much larger leaves and solitary flowers and fruits. A tree atAldenham has produced a shoot and flowers of Crat^go-mespilus Asnieresii. grandiflora. (Mespilus Smithii, De Candolle ; M. grandiflora, Smith; Pyrus lobata, Nicholson.) A deciduous tree up to 30 ft. high, of rounded habit, the lower branchespendulous ; branchlets downy. Leaves oval or obovate, 2 to 3^ ins. long, half to two-thirds as wide ; often with several angular lobes towards theend, these being most developed on the barren young shoots; marginsfinely toothed ; both surfaces downy ; stalk i to ^ in. long, hairy. Flowersusually in pairs or threes, terminating short, leafy twigs ; each flower i , pure white, produced on a short, woolly stalk. Fruit 4* m. diameter, globular, yellowish brown, flesh mealy, tasting like that of a hawthorn, containing two hard stones. A presumed natural hybrid between Crataegus monogyna and Mespflusgermanica, found wild in France in the departments of Saone-et-Loire andRhone on the east, and of Gironde on the west. It appears to be sterile,
