Close-up of the street signs of Salita del Fondaco alley and Piazza De Ferrari Genoa's main square, Liguria, Italy
Piazza De Ferrari, Genoa's main square, is dedicated to Raffaele De Ferrari, the Duke of Galliera, a generous benefactor who donated a considerable sum of money in 1875 towards projects to expand the port. Salita del Fondaco is a narrow alley that from Piazza De Ferrari goes down towards the Cathedral of San Lorenzo. The "fondaco" is a building (or complex of buildings) of medieval origin, which in the sea towns performed functions as a warehouse and, often, as a lodging for foreign merchants.
