PLATE XXXV Figure 43.—Angina Mycotica (IMycoticAngina) Figure 43.—Angina Mycotica (iVIycoticAngina) The mucous membrane of the fauces is neither rednor swollen. In the follicles of the tonsils which arenot enlarged, yellowish-white keratogenous plugs areseen extending several millimetres above the mucousmembrane. The plugs can be squeezed out of thefollicles and appear by microscopic examination to becomposed of masses of epithelium, calcareous mate-rial, and threads of fungi (Leptothrix Buccalis). 212 Plate XXXV.

PLATE XXXVI Figure 44.—Lingua Geographica (The Geo-graphical Tongue) Figure 45.—Lingua Geographica (The Geo-graphical Tongue) Figure 44.—Lingua Geograpliica (The Geo-grapliical Tongue) The entire tongue is somewhat coated. The epi-thehum is thickened and arranged in the form of bowsand garlands. There is no swelling or pain. Thedifferential diagnosis of this condition from an an-nular syphilide of the tongue was not easy, and there-fore the fact that the patient had, six weeks before,a not very characteristic ulcer in the coronary sulcuswas of considerable importance. No treponematapallida were found, the Wassermann reaction wasnegative and there was an inflammatory adenitis inthe left inguinal region. As the patient insisted he had had these whitebows on his tongue from childhood, and as in thecourse of the further observation no manifestations ofsecondary syphilis appeared, the diagnosis of syphiliswas excluded.
