Iran/Persia: 'Bahram and the Indian Princess in the Black Pavilion'. Safavid miniature folio with calligraphy by Murshid al-Shirazi (fl. 16th century), 1548. Bahram V was the fourteenth Sassanid King of Persia (r. 420-438). Also called Bahram Gur or Bahramgur, he was a son of Yazdegerd I, after whose sudden death (or assassination) he gained the crown against the opposition of the grandees by the help of Mundhir, the Arab dynast of al-Hirah. Bahram Gur is a great favourite in Persian literature and poetry. Numerous legends have been associated with Bahram.
