Iceberg After 12 Hours Under Lamp Black. Viewed from the Ice Patrol oceanographic vessel Evergreen 12 hours later, the iceberg has shed its coating of lamp black (carbon) in a mild process of melting. The left half of the iceberg which was covered with 100 lbs. of lamp black appeared to have lighted and raised slightly while the untouched half seamed lower. New water lines became evident. At this time, however, no official evaluation is available on the effects of the lamp black on the berg.
