The tube A, mounted in the block B, and inserted in a bath of warm water in the Dewar flask D, serves as a support for the thermal-junction wires C. The mercury thermometer E is inserted to the depth of the thermal-junctions. The water in the flask is stirred by compressed air entering through the tube F. so as to bulge outward from the support. This copper plate furnishes one of the metals of the thermo-couple, a constantan wire soldered to the center of the back supplying the other, and a copper wire, also soldered to the plate, completing the circuit. The base is made of cork in order to give the apparatus a smaller mass, and the copper is shaped in the manner described so that it may 'Gamgee, loc.
