Walter Herman Sheldon (1911-1988), US pathologist. Sheldon, born in Germany as Walter Silbergleit, moved to the USA in 1938. He changed his name and became a US citizen in 1942. Sheldon was Professor and chairman of the Department of Pathology at Emory University's School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Subjects he studied included infectious diseases such as the fungal disease mucormycosis. He also engaged in classified medical nuclear weapons-related research in the 1950s for the US Department of Defence on the effects of radiation from thorium dioxide (Therotrast) on mammalian cells.
