Gallegos, from El Paso, Texas, assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), tests the battery and oxygen levels on a portable exothermic cutting unit (PECU) in the damage control shop. The unit is used for cutting through steel to access a blocked space. Makin Island, home-ported in San Diego, is conducting a depot-level maintenance availability.
