The monastery (also spelled as Jiu or Sparrow Monastery) belongs the Red Hat (Nyingmapa) Tibetan sect and is closely associated with Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) who is said to have mediated in the cave located in the heart of the monastery. Lake Manasarovar lies at 4,590m above sea level and is revered as a sacred place in four religions: Bön, Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism and attracts pilgrims from India, Nepal, Tibet and the rest of the world.
