On some matters his point of view is apt to be a littledifferent from that of the man specially initiated into the mysteries of thecraft. In the preparation of these pages the sense of this disadvantagehas often been felt by the writer, even although he has been closelyconnected with the Faculty in Glasgow for over thirty years. His onlyapology indeed for putting his hand to the work at all is that it seemeda thing sooner or later to be done, and he saw no likelihood of the taskbeing undertaken by any of the present Fellows. In their relation tosuch an undertaking the members of the medical profession generally maybe placed in two categories—those who have much professional work todo, and those who have little.
