Just as the fourteenth century dawned, the wave ofexcommunication centered about William of Occom, whoaided that movement which blos-somed into virile life, first systema-tically forcing the issue between nopriesthood and free inquiry, asagainst sacramental ecclesiasticism. The influence of the martyr, Wal-ter Lollard (founder of the Lol-lards, burned for heresy at Colognein 1322) speeded John Wyclif of Oxford Uni-versity became a Separatist, hefound the Statute of Provisors ofEdward III had sown Lollard seed.
