In the general syncytium the amount of exo-plasm has markedly increased. The fibrils are branched and distinct, but of unequal size, the latter characteristic being most obvious in thosebounding the little lacunae in the interstices of the syncjrtium. In a pig 12-| cm. in length the basement membranes are very shatplyand deeply stained and show numerous fibrillar connections with the f^^S^^- <?? J^ /Jr. $;-!L^r<-^^^^ ^^ t^H&. i\ ? :: / W4x^. Fig. 5. Fig. 4. Alveolus from submaxillary gland of an embryo pig 12K cm. long, showing the gathering of the exoplasm into fasciculi and increase in the size andnumber of the lacunar spaces. The dots represent partly fibrils cut in cross-sectionand partly granules of endoplasm situated on the fibrils. Fixed in Zenkers by Mallorys method. Magnified 900 diameters. Fig. 5. The anastomosing mass offibrils now stands out with greater distinctness owing to the compactfascicular arrangement, a fact emphasized by interstitial lacunae whichincrease proportionally as the exoplasmic fibrils are gathered intobundles or fasciculi that
