Popula-tion appeared to be at a stand-still, and linally the trustees in1752 surrendered their rightsto the crown. More liberallaws followed and the prosper-ity increased. Of General Oglethorpe, itmay be atlded that he lived to reach his ninety-eighth year. It was said of himthat he was the handsomest old man in London, and people often sto2iped on thestreets to look at and admire him. He always had a warm regard for theAmerican colonies.
