Ear anatomy. Composite artwork showing the position of the outer ear (left) and eardrum (centre) on a man's head. The outer ear consists of the pinna (far left) and the ear canal (external auditory meatus, centre left), which leads to the eardrum. The eardrum, or tympanic membrane, is a thin membrane that separates the outer ear from the middle ear. It's function is to transmit sound from the air to the ossicles (bones) inside the middle ear.
