[TIRING the years which brought the eighteenthcentury to a close, a Boston gentleman, , arrived at the Chaudiere and determinedto settle in the vicinity. He obtained, withoutmuch difficulty, considerable tracts cf land, and,establishing himself upon the north shore of theer, sowed the seeds of that great lumber trade forwhich the Ottawa region is justly famed. Then thedistrict was virtually in its primeval condition, neitherenterprise nor industry having commenced the work ofreclamation. Upon the south shore the land was, in an agricul-tural sense, not of a promising character, being both rocky andsandy. But Mr. Wright had, nevertheless, secured a considerabletract of land south of the river, and it fell out that one of hisworkmen, Nicholas Sparks, accepted, in lieu of payment ofcertain wages, some Jaindreds of ac
