Allergic conjunctivitis and oedema of a patient's eye. The white of the eye is bloodshot and the lower eyelid is slightly distorted due to a build up of fluid (oedema) under the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is the membrane that lines the inside of the eyelids and covers the white of the eye. This inflammation was caused by an allergic reaction of the conjunctiva to a foreign substance. Allergic conjunctivitis is common and can be triggered by make-up, contact lens solution or pollen. Treatment includes avoidance of the cause, and antihistamine eyedrops to relieve the symptoms.
