Louis XI of France visiting Cardinal Balue in his iron cage, 1469-1480 (1882-1884). Jean Balue (c1421-1491) was a cardinal and minister of Louis XI. He intrigued with Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, against the king and was imprisoned for 11 years. The popular story that he served his sentence confined in an iron cage is not thought to have been true. He was released in 1480 after the intervention of Pope Sixtus IV. A print from La France et les Français à Travers les Siècles, Volume II, F Roy editor, A Challamel, Saint-Antoine, 1882-1884.
