The Syrian ploughman with hisfrail plough must wait till the autumnal rains have saturated andsoftened the ground before he can make any impression on thesoil. His ploughing must be done in the rainy and cold season, from the last part of October and onward tlu^ough the month ofJanuary. To this fact there are allusions in Scripture. Thesluggard will not plough, says Solomon (Prov. 20 :1), by rea-son of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have noth-ing. Our farmers, says Thomson with reference to those ofPalestine, do actually plough in the severest weather. X haveoften seen them shivering with cold, and contending with windand rain, quite enough to discourage those who are not slug-gards. B
