Thus it chanced that forfourteen years he had charge of the home and foreigncorrespondence of the republic, the registration oftrials, the keeping of the minutes of the councils, andthe drafting of agreements with other states. More-over he was sent in various capacities to one or otherlocality within the State of Tuscany, and on twenty-three occasions he acted as legate on important em-bassies to foreign princes, e. g. to Catherine Sforza(1499), to France (1500, 1510, 1511), to the emperor. On the discovery of theCapponi and Boscoli plot against Cardinal Giovannide Medici, Machiavelli was accused as an accomplice,and tortured, but he was set free when the cardinalbecame Pope Leo X.
