China: Tungan (Hui Muslim) soldiers in winter uniform, c. 1933 The ethnic Hui people are mostly concentrated in northwestern China and have an estimated population of about 10 million. They are ethnically similar to the Han, except for their practice of Islam. Many Hui are direct descendants of Silk Road travelers.
